Rehydrating the Category: Inside SULT's mission to reposition electrolytes
Every now and then we have the rare privilege to catch an ambitious Challenger brand on the rise. Better yet, this one is openly building in public, giving us a full behind-the-scenes look at how they do it. SULT, a new electrolyte sachet company, is denying the assumptions held by others in the hydration category, that hydration is only for gym bros or those running marathons. Instead, they are carving out a space for electrolytes that’s full of balance, humour and real human connection. Our strategy director, Jono Wylie, sat down with SULT co founder Henry Porpora to understand why focusing on their brand has been critical to SULT’s success thus far.



For those who haven’t heard of you, can you tell us about SULT?
Essentially, we are a hydration brand called SULT. Obviously, SULT is a play on the word salt, which is the key component in electrolytes and sodium. What we’re doing is creating a product for the everyday market, or the middle market, because historically, up until now, electrolyte brands have been predominantly marketed to what we call ‘the Chads’, the people who are 5:00am marathon runners, and it’s a very masculine dominated market. So, I'm someone who likes to keep healthy, as does Milly Goldsmith, my cofounder, but we also don't mind going out on the weekend, enjoying ourselves with friends. We are also aware that most of us are sitting behind a desk, nine to five. To me, we're not living this extravagant lifestyle, so we created a brand and a product for that.

What is it that SULT is challenging in the current marketplace? What’s the gap it’s filling for consumers?
We believe in showing, not telling. We do, we don't say. We've never once created a pitch deck or any of that stuff, because we just do what we say we'll do. But in this category, every single functional area needed a bit of a spruce up. The branding in the space is so boring. It's so pharmaceutical. It looks like a medical product and everything looks the same. It's targeted at male gym guys, or it's targeted as a medical product like Dioralyte, whereas we've gone for a beautiful, bright aesthetic. SULT is a lifestyle brand. We're not trying to fit into your gym bag. This is something that we want people to have out on their desk, have out by their bedside. Formulation-wise, we've gone for a very high dosage of electrolytes across the board, but a medium sodium level, which is the particular ingredient people focus on when it comes to hydration drinks when they're athletes, because they're sweating significantly more.
We're always true to our core value of not entertaining the hustle culture that's now glamorized across every sector of life, including fitness. We're currently living in extremes and there's no acceptance of balance and trying to just crack on, enjoy life to the fullest. That's at the core of why we actually started the brand. We try to show balance through every part of life, whether that be work, eating correctly, exercise, but also enjoying yourself, because going out for a beer with your mates is actually great for you. Connecting with people is part of wellness.
We want to reposition the category away from hustle-, gym-, bro-culture to the everyday market, because that's where it belongs. There's nothing I love more than having electrolytes first thing in the morning. It makes me feel amazing. I replace it with my coffee. I don't get the crash. So, all of those benefits shouldn't be hidden and given secretly to the athlete market. So, it's positioning electrolytes for the everyday person, and doing it in a way that they feel empowered and comfortable with beautiful branding, positioning and marketing.
That’s interesting that you have gone with a different formulation than your competitors who focus more on sodium. Why have you steered clear of this more functional conversation in your communications?
I'm a strong believer that our product is insane and the flavour profile is incredible. But there's a million brands out there that have great tasting products. Why we have become a cult product is our positioning, our branding, and the feeling that we evoke as a brand. It's crucial to have a great product, but to create the noise, it’s the marketing, the feeling about the brand that you can't quantify. When you say a brand in your head, how does it make you feel?
The hydration space is so saturated. It's crazy how many brands are in this space. But you can't copy IPs on the front of electrolyte packs. There's no IP for electrolytes, because they are broad spectrum. It's like saying someone's copied your IP in a water brand. It’s water. It's the compounds that make electrolytes and you can have differing dosages of the ingredients, but it’s the brand that you can’t copy – the feeling and the marketing.

Your branding and marketing really does stand out in this category – what emotions are you trying to tap into?
The number one emotion is just making someone smile. We're living in a world now where there's constantly crap on the news. People are just glued to their phones and pretty miserable. So we’re keen make people laugh and smile, because you immediately break down friction and barriers when you make someone laugh. And that's what we've done so well with our marketing. Milly and I position ourselves as a brother and sister (we aren’t siblings) and we're showing the reality of how funny it is when you try something new, how many fuck ups we do. All our marketing is to try and make people feel part of that and then laugh and smile.
You mentioned that you were anti-hustle culture but your branding is still high-energy – a combination one doesn’t usually see. Does this reflect your internal company culture?
Milly and I are both very full on people. So it makes sense that the brand also has very high energy. And that comes with a lot of benefits, but also a lot of cons as well. We’re constantly trying to do more but we try to always go back to our core values. For example, we did a post the other day showing how we went away for a week to the Alps. We did a whole thing where we just switched off, and I did about an hour work a day – that's the least I've done in years. The reception that post got was amazing. People loved it, because I think everyone, deep down, resonates with that need to switch off more and more. So, it was actually really important for us to show that, not just say it. Because if as a founder, you posted on LinkedIn, ‘I did nothing for a week.’ The response would be, ‘Oh what are you doing? Wake up at 6am, ice bath, go to bed at 12am, etc.’ I wake up at eight at best, and I just try and do my very best and then accept that. It's work in progress. We've by no means nailed that messaging, but it's something we're trying to integrate a bit more each time.
Why did you decide to ‘build in public’ or share all the mess ups with your audience while building your business?
I just think everyone is winging it in this world. I think I know what I'm doing but I'm not 100% sure. I'm 70% sure. So, if we have a few hiccups and we fuck up here and there, which we do, why not just share that? Because we're human, and it's about helping people to connect to the business. Brands and businesses don't fuck up, humans do. So, we're trying to humanise the brand.

What advice do you have for others who want to take this potentially risky route to their marketing?
Like with anything you do, it's just about starting. Zero to one is the hardest thing you can ever do. For example, my friend has started jiu jitsu and he said, ‘The hardest belt to get is the white belt, because you have to show up.’ I love that phrase, because it's so true. You have to just go and do it, and then you can get better. The first time I had the camera out, I was like ‘Oh my god, this is so cringe.’ But I did it, and then I edited it, and I didn't post it for three or four months. But when I did post it finally, not a single person said anything negative. They were like ‘This is awesome. It's great.’ So then you just try and do it again and then again. You also have to realise it's not about your vanity or ego. Social media metrics are part of the brand. So, you need to do your finances, you need to do your x, y, z, and this is also a part of the functional area that you need to include. So it’s about just starting and then not siloing it as a separate business function. It’s part of running the business.
In a big, established company, it’s also about storytelling and then empowering those people at the top to bring the company to life. Because every area of the company has a story. For example, when we made our first hire, Sophie, she did an amazing job storytelling what she's doing. We said to her, ‘You've got an opportunity here to basically build a bit of the brand and come in as part of its character.’ So she did three videos and they’re on 300,000 impressions because she didn’t say where she's going. She made it into a game for people to guess what company she was going to. That got people interested. Hiring someone is boring, right? But we told Sophie that if someone guesses correctly we'll give them a £100 voucher for the company. So, then people were tagging and tagging and tagging. So, you can gamify all these separate areas of your content, and that makes it different to everyone else’s content. I think that's the beautiful thing about content.
You’ve launched a few really interesting and out of category partnerships including one with Lovehoney, the sex toys and lingerie company. How do you decide to work with or not, as the case may be?
One of the key things that we're about is breaking down the bizarre constructs of this hydration world. You don’t have to be a gym bro, 5am running marathons, right? Candy Kittens is a fun, playful brand who doesn’t necessarily stand for anything apart from cleaner ingredients, but it evokes a nice emotion. It's a cool brand. And they have pretty much an identical consumer demographic to us. With Lovehoney, that was daring. We thought, ‘Oh, do you think you should do that yet? Because it will add conflict to this industry that is not necessarily needed.’ But we wanted to do it. You wouldn’t necessarily put the two together, hydration and lubrication, but then once you explain it, it makes sense. Partnerships for us are about trying to do what's not expected and question the status quo of the industry.
For example, we don't do any run clubs. We veto those. Every other hydration brand loves that space, so we don't want to be there. We want to be in artists’ spaces, coffee shops, places like that. We don't want to be where everyone else is. We don't know how and where we fit or how we get there yet, but it's definitely in more unusual spots. People still think we belong with running, and that's great because that's where most of our market is. But we're also trying to make a new market. We want to reposition and retarget hydration.
We have turned down a few partnership opportunities because we have to be so protective of our brand. I think that's where everyone goes wrong in startups and businesses, chasing profit and growth rather than actually protecting the brand for the longer term.
Speaking of growing for the longer term, what do you think are the downsides of growing too quickly?
I truly think that we can be the UK's biggest hydration brand, but the way to do that is slow growth. It's not chasing quick like wins. You know, we're self-funded. We haven't taken any investment opportunities, because it would be the only reason why we say yes is to scale quicker. What's the point? You know, yes, if I want to add an extra zero to the account for just ego reasons, but we're trying to create something more a movement, like a cool brand that's everlasting, rather than a quick flip.
When you grow too quickly, you lose touch with what you're actually trying to do. If you're just trying to grow so quickly, it's cool, because you'll see yourself in shops and you’ll see massive growth in the company revenue, etc. But other than that I don't really see the point. If you try to grow at a sustainable rate, organically as well, without mass investment, you're going to start making the right choices. With money, you make short term decisions, and without money, you make really strategic, creative decisions, which make the brand far stronger than any quick fix can do.
