Rewarding the Misdemeanours

By Nick Geoghegan, 15/08/2011

A very quick one from me, but I thought I would share this great idea from Blink 182 and AT&T. With most of the music industry doing all it can to push water uphill by chasing music pirates across the internet, shutting down YouTube videos that use unlicensed tracks, I love that this idea bucks that trend beautifully.

Blink 182 have searched the whole of YouTube to find movies, fan videos and cover versions that feature their music. And in doing so, the creator of these videos have flaunted the laws of copyright.

Instead of setting the lawyers on these desktop Spielberg’s, the band have rewarded them by using their content in their new music video. Without asking or letting them know.

I suppose that if the film makers are flaunting permissions, then Blink 182 have every right to do the same.

It’s a great example of the music industry finally showing a human face. These aren’t pirates. These are fans.

Update: Oh, and credit where it’s due, I found it on PSFK
