A rubbish statement
By Bella Acton, 11/06/2010
There are some messages we’ve heard over and over again. So much, in fact, that we’re tired of hearing them and seem to be immune to their meaning. Case in point here? Litter in our seas. This is something I feel really strongly about, but the ‘don’t litter’ stuff just doesn’t cut it after a while.
That’s why I was so pleased by this stunt by the Plastic Pollution Coalition and agency Rethink.
They took a sculpture of dolphins in Vancouver and wrapped it in giant plastic can rings.
The impact is profound – and so much more powerful than reading generic ‘put litter in it’s place’ messages on disposable coffee cups. Things like this don’t cost much to do and will be sure to generate plenty of buzz and PR in a way no coffee cup could achieve. So, let’s think about the big, bold, powerful, symbols we could create to make people take notice of us again. And please, don’t litter!
