A Chopstick Education
By Bella Acton, 27/09/2010
A few of us fish were in Joberg last week for a workshop. Lots to tell, but this particular story was about one of our dinners. Jetlagged and diosrientated, we went for a post-workshop meal. The food was superb (mind you, anything would have sufficed by that point) but what really struck me was my chopsticks. That’s right, those two humble wooden sticks. Printed on their wrapper were a series of useful Japanese phrases.
I love that this overlooked wrapper has become a medium for a message. I would not have loved it if it were a branded message with someone trying to flog me stuff – but it was someone merely wanting to educate me a little. It was a thoughtful gesture. And everyone likes to feel as though someone has thought about them, just a little.
