Honda Challenging the Conventions of the Wheel

By Chad Dick, 4/02/2011

When looking for good ‘opportunties’ for your brand our business, we sometimes say it’s good to look for ideas that are ‘already exist, just not widely distributed’ (paraphrasing from William Gibson). I came across this example recently from Honda. It’s been getting a lot of buzz and pass along on the web — about ~5MM views on YouTube alone. I think what most people are interested in is comparing it to the Segway. However, what I thought was most interesting in this prototype was Honda’s wheel innovation — creating a wheel that can travel in any direction on a plane, as opposed to the conventional wheel we’re all used to that can only go forward and backward (without turning a steering wheel). So this technology now exists, but isn’t yet widely distributed. I wonder how long it will be before a Challenger who makes a product with wheels will find an opportunity to use this technology and make it more widely distributed. Time will tell.
