Facebook Suicide
By Bella Acton, 27/05/2010
It’s been brewing for a while now and here it is. May 31st – National Quit Facebook Day.
Facebook and Google have been sitting uncomfortably amidst the privacy debate. They have pushed and pissed off a lot of people for breach of privacy – which has fuelled this facebook slamming movement. On a side note, Zuckerberg’s responses to this are laughable (“we’re building a web where the default is social.” and better still “The way people think about privacy is changing a bit” really?!)
For every trend, there is a counter trend. And this is the ultimate proof.
National Quit Day is hoping that on May 31st, there will be a mass facebook suicide.

The first thing the site tells us is “Sick of Facebook’s lack of respect for your data? Add your name and commit to quit!”. There is also a live tally of those committed to quitting on May 31st too. On the site, you can commit to quit, get email reminders, or join the conversation amongst those thinking/ready to quit.
So, what to learn from this. Is there a trend or counter trend we can lean into to give ourselves even more traction? What ‘day’ might we create, and what would we want people to do on it?
On a side note, my two friends that are the best at staying in touch are not on facebook. I’m not ready for a FB suicide just yet. Are you?
