A Cheesy Charge
By Bella Acton, 26/05/2010
I have just read about this incredible technology that uses the by-products from the cheese making process (namely whey) to generate electricity….Amazing. I am ITCHING for this to be turned into a branded service and even more ITCHING to play a part in building that brand! Electricity has never been so interesting…or cheesy. So this post is half informative, half-plea to find out more! Any cheese-wizards out there?
The thinking behind this technology is sound. Apparently one small feta factory will have 4,000 tonnes of whey to dispose of each year….why not churn it into something else? Cheese jokes and puns aside, this opportunity is big, and not just dependant on the popularity of greek salads. I find it particularly interesting that suddenly, it’s possible to envisage the interconnectedness of everything. For example, as an environmentally conscious consumer, I can actively choose the cheese I know disposes of its waste, not just safely, but efficiently.
Just think, if we are not far off connecting edam and energy – what else in our lives will be integrated? Or, perhaps more realistically, what won’t?
